Bond statement in response to humanitarian crises monitoring: impact of coronavirus report by the IDC

Simon Starling, Director of policy, advocacy and research at Bond, the UK network for organisations working in international development said:

“This timely report is a reminder of the urgent situation millions around the world face as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to devastate lives and livelihoods. The UK is well-placed to show leadership to ensure that no-one is left behind due to its strong global reputation on aid. We would agree that NGOs and civil society groups play a crucial role working with local communities so should be placed at the heart of the global response. UK aid must primarily focus on programmes that deliver support on the ground to people who need it most, whilst ensuring safeguarding and action against gender-based violence remain a top priority.

UK NGOs and civil society groups are increasingly having to take the risk of eating into their reserves because of the lack of funding available to respond to Covid-19. We support calls for more funding to be made available for organisations on the frontline of the pandemic but now facing uncertain futures.”
