Sector needs greater salary transparency to close pay gap, says Bond, who signs up to pledge to disclose salaries on its jobs board

Today, Bond the UK network for organisations working in international development, has signed up to #ShowTheSalary and committed to disclosing all salaries on the networks job board to promote fairer pay across the sector.

Up until now, organisations in the UK charity sector advertising on the Bond website were not required to disclose salary information on their job adverts. In light of increasing evidence revealing how omitting salaries discourages applicants from asking for better pay, particularly people of colour and women, Bond will now be asking all organisations and recruitment agencies to be transparent about salaries in advertised jobs.

Stephanie Draper, CEO of Bond said:

“Hiding salaries perpetuates both the gender wage gap and pay discrimination towards minority groups. Something as simple as providing a clear salary range can help us make a huge leap forwards in addressing this unfairness. We are very proud to join #ShowTheSalary as part of our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion in the charity sector, and I’d urge our members to do the same. Excellent staff from all backgrounds deserve greater transparency and a fair wage.”

Research has found that people of colour are often offered lower salaries than their white counterparts by hiring managers and unconscious biases in recruitment processes result in a reluctance to negotiate.

Women have also been found to be adversely affected by the lack of transparency as they are less likely to haggle for a higher salary, in contrast to men, resulting in women being paid less than men to do the same job.

A spokesperson from Show The Salary said:

“We are delighted that Bond has pledged to always #ShowTheSalary in their job listings. Given all Bond’s work to promote good practice across the NGO sector, we hope other NGOs will follow their lead and always #ShowTheSalary when recruiting in future. This simple and easy step will move us closer to a world where everyone has the chance to earn a fair wage.”
